What Is Tarion?

Tarion is a private not-for-profit corporation established by the Ontario government to administer the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. Its primary purpose is to ensure that new homebuyers receive the warranty protection they are entitled to and to promote quality construction practices.

Tarion Warranty Coverage

Tarion provides a comprehensive warranty that protects new homebuyers against various issues, including construction defects, water penetration, structural problems, and other defects. The warranty is divided into three parts:

1-Year Warranty: Covers issues such as unauthorized substitutions, defects in work and materials, and violations of the Ontario Building Code.
2-Year Warranty: Provides coverage against water penetration, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC defects, and building envelope issues.
7-Year Warranty: Protects against major structural defects that threaten the integrity of the building.

Consumer Protection and Complaint Resolution

Tarion acts as an advocate for consumers, offering a process for resolving disputes and addressing complaints. If a builder fails to meet their obligations, Tarion can step in to ensure that homebuyers receive the coverage they are entitled to.
